Parliamentary Opinion Writing Exercise

Purpose:
  • To practice and to discuss the one skill parliamentarians are not taught at the unit level or at any parliamentary conference;
  • To share and discuss one's parliamentary opinion writing sample;
  • To practice parliamentary opinion writing based on several established NAP standard formats.
Joint Meeting:
  • One hour lesson conducted by one advanced unit (Sigma Rho Pi);
  • followed by lunch;
  • followed by a second one hour lesson conducted by the second advanced unit (Nu Rho Pi).
When:
  • February 12, 2011; Lessons from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Where:
Lesson 1 presented by Sigma Rho Pi:
  • Every attendee needs to write 3 Parliamentary Opinions before the joined meeting.
  • Read the 3 parliamentary situations for the 3 Parliamentary Opinions.
  • Each Parliamentary Opinion must follow a different NAP opinion writing accepted standard.
  • See the NAP Standard Formats on the left sidebar.
  • See some Writing Samples on the left sidebar.
  • Bring a copy of each of your Parliamentary Opinions for each attendee (12-15 copies per opinion).
  • Or, email your written opinions to parliam@roberts-rules.com by February the 10th, and I will make the copies for you.
Lesson 2 presented by Nu Rho Pi:
  • Controlling Committees
  • How does an assembly control its committees?
  • How does an assembly get its committees to do what they should?
  • The lesson will include motions related to committees, discussions of the problems, and possible solutions.
